Cwmamman 9 Godregraig 0

When only two cars full of Godregraig players turned up at Grenig park, Cwmamman thought they were going to playing against seven players but then the free pensioners bus turned up and the remaining four players got off.

Cwmamman themselves were down to the bare bones and were fielding five players over 35 years of age with another two 40 pluses on the bench so it came as no surprise when the game started at a snails pace.

Cwmamman soon got their passing game under way although the soggy conditions were hampering their good work. First goal came after twenty minutes when an excellent ball over the top from right back Carl James was met by the on-rushing Brian James who skilfully tucked the ball away with one touch.

Cwm then suffered a setback when they lost veteran midfielder Jason Griff who had to go off after an unexplained muscle pull at the back of his leg, and was replaced by even more of a veteran Eirian Rees who was daunted by the thought of having to last a full hour.

Rees was soon in the thick of things and should have scored when the ball bounced loose to him two yards from goal but instead of scoring managed to hack up the goalmouth by kicking a big patch of mud into the top corner. Luckily the ball spun away to Carl Jones with the youngster showing the old master how to stick the ball in the net.

The writing was on the wall with Cwmamman completely dominating and were unlucky not be three up when Carl James smashed a thunderbolt against the post.

Any little counter attack Godregraig did have was easily snuffed out by the impressive Phillip Baxter, Steve Howie and Paul ‘teeps’ Davies at the back for Cwm.

James did get his first goal of the season before half time when he struck a little gem into the bottom corner to end the game as a contest.

By the time the second half started Godregraig were pretty much ready to throw in the towel but Cwm weren’t ready to accept the surrender yet. Carl Jones had added his 2nd and 3rd goals and Jason Cousins had bagged a brace of beauties before Cwmamman, showing no mercy, unleashed Jeff Matthews. It turned out to be an inspired substitution as Matthews’ first touch was a delicate pass into the bottom corner of the Graig net.

Lewis Key did have to make one good save in the second half but apart from that needn’t had bothered getting changed.

Daniel ‘Butsy’ Roberts who was the pick of the Cwmamman players was outstanding down the right wing, battling for every ball and working tirelessly to help out in defence when his right back had again bombed forward.

In fairness to the old fellow in goals for Graig he did pull off one outstanding save to deny Eirian Rees his third goal of the season but was helpless when Paul ‘Tich’ Jones finished off the rout.

This was a well disciplined performance from Cwmamman who kept trying to keep the ball moving in tricky conditions and also resisted the temptation to all bomb forward in search of goals with the game in the bag.

Back to the league next week for Cwm where they entertain INCO C’s who have previously pinched a cheeky point on the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Cwmamman 7 Britton Ferry 3

This match was a potential banana skin for Cwmamman with Britton Ferry supposedly strengthening their team by signing nine new players since the last time the two teams met at the start of the season.

What is now accepted as the norm for all home games this season, it came as no surprise when Ferry turned up late, the only exception this week was that a car full of Ferry boy’s had got lost on route and unfortunately ended up in Brynaman.

Before the three Ferry subs had even arrived, Cwmamman had raced into a three goal lead with on fire centre forward Dai Kelly scoring a hattrick of tap ins quicker than Steve Howard can drink a yard of ale.

By half time Cwm were five goals up with Jason Cousins accurately passing the ball into the bottom corner and Kelly scoring his fourth with another tap-in.

With the game in the bag, even centre half Aled Rees found himself galloping forward at one stage leaving three would be tacklers in his wake only to panic at the final moment and blast the ball into the Amman River.

Cwm also had a couple of goals ruled offside by the dodgy linesman before Ferry scored a couple of cheeky goals which came as a bit of shock to the home side.

The plan of taking Kemi Adamson off to give the rest of the team’s eardrums a rest backfired when he was even noisier on the touchline but atleast proud new dad Steve Howard got to have a run. Off as well went the knackered but ever improving Daniel ‘butsy’ Roberts to be replaced by the just graduated Mathew Norrington.

Jason Griffiths kept up his great scoring run of zero goals this season when he fired ball number 2 into the Amman River and Cousins and Kelly were both denied by a brilliant double save by the Ferry keeper.

Kelly did eventually score his fifth tap in of the match before he was replaced by Carl Jones, and it was Jones who set up Cousins for his easiest ever goal only for him to amazingly scuff it wide at full stretch from half a yard out….and half a yard is being generous to him.

With the Cwm boys still in stitches after Cousins miss, Ferry raced up the pitch and somehow got their third goal when a tame shot bamboozled Lewys Key beating him on his near post. Britton Ferry in fairness battled well throught and were unfortunate to concede a seventh goal before the end after Paul Jones had raced through.

Cwmamman now find themselves only two points behind league leaders Cambrian with a difficult ‘must win’ game next week against INCO b who have already beaten Cwm at home this season.
