Cwm 3rds match report

Cwmamman 2 Longford 1

With Longford without a single point and Cwmamman without a home win all season, something was going to have to give in this potential banana skin of a match in front of a large crowd at Grenig Park.

Cwmamman came flying out of the blocks and should have been at least three or four goals to the good within the first twenty minutes but some dreadful finishing, some bad luck and some superb goalkeeping, Longford somehow managed to escape this early onslaught unscathed.

With Cwmamman growing in confidence and completely dominating, it came as a massive shock when the visitors broke clear down the right wing and after some poor defending, scored completely against the run of play.

Chances kept coming and going for Cwm and it was beginning to look like it was going to be one of the days for long periods.

Infact, it took a couple of great saves from Cwmamman keeper Wayne Neal to stop Longford extending their lead.

The equalising goal did eventually come however when a well placed Brendan Nicklin free kick was floated into the danger zone and Jonathon Morgan rose above the crowd to flick a deft little header in at the near post to the delight of the home fans.

Longford still looked dangerous on the attack with their skilful winger and lone striker causing all sorts of problems for the Cwm defence.

The winner came with ten minutes remaining when Andrew Stevens, who managed to last the ninety minutes without pulling one of his muscles, hit an accurate shot on the turn that dribbled in to the bottom corner which prompted some wild, orgasmic scenes of celebrations from the home team and fans.

This was a really exciting game of football with Longford giving a great performance and will be disappointed to come away in the end with nothing.

Next week Cwmamman are home again, this time against Tonna who are flying at the top of the division. Kick off 2.30pm

Macwhirter Welsh League News

At a Special Welsh League EGM held on January 31st 2010 at Maesteg Park Football Club all 54 Clubs were told of the implications of the reduction of Clubs to 48 coming in to season 2010-11.

Basically if NO Club/Clubs are relegated from the League Of Wales then there would be 5 teams relegated from the 1st Division to the Second. Seven teams would be relegated from the 2nd to the 3rd. Eight teams would be relegated from the third out of the League back to their local area’s Leagues.

On the subject of ground criteria it was confirmed by League Chairman Mr. David Griffiths that all 54 Clubs conformed to the 1988 Ground Criteria stipulations but three Clubs had confirmed that their grounds would be ready for the closing date of April 30th 2010. The names of the three Clubs were not disclosed.

Promotion to the Welsh league through the Pyramid system was as normal i.e one team from West Wales, one team from South Wales and one from Gwent.

Eight teams have applied from South Wales, three from Gwent and NO team has applied from West Wales.

As it stands at the moment what Cwmamman need to achieve, this season is to finish 10th place or above to avoid relegation back to the Neath League.
