Cwmamman 9 Godregraig 0
When only two cars full of Godregraig players turned up at Grenig park, Cwmamman thought they were going to playing against seven players but then the free pensioners bus turned up and the remaining four players got off.
Cwmamman themselves were down to the bare bones and were fielding five players over 35 years of age with another two 40 pluses on the bench so it came as no surprise when the game started at a snails pace.
Cwmamman soon got their passing game under way although the soggy conditions were hampering their good work. First goal came after twenty minutes when an excellent ball over the top from right back Carl James was met by the on-rushing Brian James who skilfully tucked the ball away with one touch.
Cwm then suffered a setback when they lost veteran midfielder Jason Griff who had to go off after an unexplained muscle pull at the back of his leg, and was replaced by even more of a veteran Eirian Rees who was daunted by the thought of having to last a full hour.
Rees was soon in the thick of things and should have scored when the ball bounced loose to him two yards from goal but instead of scoring managed to hack up the goalmouth by kicking a big patch of mud into the top corner. Luckily the ball spun away to Carl Jones with the youngster showing the old master how to stick the ball in the net.
The writing was on the wall with Cwmamman completely dominating and were unlucky not be three up when Carl James smashed a thunderbolt against the post.
Any little counter attack Godregraig did have was easily snuffed out by the impressive Phillip Baxter, Steve Howie and Paul ‘teeps’ Davies at the back for Cwm.
James did get his first goal of the season before half time when he struck a little gem into the bottom corner to end the game as a contest.
By the time the second half started Godregraig were pretty much ready to throw in the towel but Cwm weren’t ready to accept the surrender yet. Carl Jones had added his 2nd and 3rd goals and Jason Cousins had bagged a brace of beauties before Cwmamman, showing no mercy, unleashed Jeff Matthews. It turned out to be an inspired substitution as Matthews’ first touch was a delicate pass into the bottom corner of the Graig net.
Lewis Key did have to make one good save in the second half but apart from that needn’t had bothered getting changed.
Daniel ‘Butsy’ Roberts who was the pick of the Cwmamman players was outstanding down the right wing, battling for every ball and working tirelessly to help out in defence when his right back had again bombed forward.
In fairness to the old fellow in goals for Graig he did pull off one outstanding save to deny Eirian Rees his third goal of the season but was helpless when Paul ‘Tich’ Jones finished off the rout.
This was a well disciplined performance from Cwmamman who kept trying to keep the ball moving in tricky conditions and also resisted the temptation to all bomb forward in search of goals with the game in the bag.
Back to the league next week for Cwm where they entertain INCO C’s who have previously pinched a cheeky point on the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
